چکیده

Oil refineries provide the lifeblood for global economic health, and disruptions to their operations have major worldwide impact. We are developing a large-scale intelligent refinery control system to assist human operators in controlling refineries during abnormal situations. Based primarily on reactive and procedural approaches to intelligent behavior, the Abnormal Event Guidance and Information System (AEGIS) will interact with multiple users and thousands of refinery components to diagnose and compensate for unanticipated plant disruptions. Adjusting the autonomy of AEGIS’s behavior is a key requirement for success in the dynamic, highly-unpredictable refinery environment. This paper discusses our procedural and reactive approach to the goal-setting, planning, and plan execution components of AEGIS, and the adjustable autonomy features they support.

Improving adjustable autonomy strategies for time-critical domains

As agents begin to perform complex tasks alongside humans as collaborative teammates, it becomes crucial that the resulting humanmultiagent teams adapt to time-critical domains. In such domains, adjustable autonomy has proven useful by allowing for a dynamic transfer of control of decision making between human and agents. However, existing adjustable autonomy algorithms commonly discretize time...

Validation of Adjustable Autonomous Control Systems for Production Plants

This paper describes a hybrid simulation environment, interfaced to an adjustable autonomous software architecture, for validation and evaluation of advanced designs using dynamic interactive scenarios. The simulator provides support for "real-time" evaluation of adjustable autonomy strategies. In such evaluations, control actions by the operator interact with hardware events, including device ...

Supporting Adjustable Autonomy in Agent Systems

Intelligent agents are being designed to assume more responsibility and for more critical tasks. In some systems, it is infeasible to simply “stop” an agent when it is about to or has done the wrong thing. Rather, we want to reduce the agent’s autonomy and give control of the unsatisfactory aspects of the agents task to another agent or person. Adjustable Autonomy (AA) is a solution, meaning th...

Adjustable Autonomy for the Real World

Adjustable autonomy refers to agents’ dynamically varying their own autonomy, transferring decision making control to other entities (typically human users) in key situations. Determining whether and when such transfers of control must occur is arguably the fundamental research question in adjustable autonomy. Previous work, often focused on individual agent-human interactions, has provided sev...
